What is the difference between a juicer and a blender?
Who doesn’t love a good glass of juice or a smoothie, especially in the arid climate of Riyadh. A cooling water melon juice or a chunky healthy smoothie sweetened with dates. You can easily pickup fresh fruits and vegetables from roadside vendors or at supermarkets & hypermarkets Al-Tamimi, Lulu, Carrefour, Pantha Otham etc.  You can use the fresh produce to make a delicious, nutritious drink — using either a blender or juicer.

However, the end result will vary because juicing and blending are two different techniques.

What is a blender?
Indicative of the name, a blender blends anything you put into it. The appliance has sharp blades which convert fruits and veggies into a thick liquid. Blenders help retain the natural fiber (unless you strain), which is great for the natural digestion process. It also prevents constipation.

There are two kinds of blenders:
A single serving (for one individual): The compact blenders offer a single-serve and are easy to use. They are efficient and come with a detachable lidded flask or cup.

Jug blenders (suitable for bigger families): These blenders come with an ingredients flask. You have to attach blender blades and detach the blades your drink is ready.

The average speed of both is about 20,000 to 29,000 rpm. The higher the rpm, the faster and smoother your blender blends.

What is a juicer?
The juicer extracts juice from fruits or vegetables while removing fiber and pulp. The result is a thinner, less concentrated juice.

Types of juicers:
Centrifugal: It extracts the juice by spinning the metal blade, which in turn presses the ingredients against a strainer. The liquid then flows to the waiting container, where the pulp is segregated.

Masticating: They are also called cold-press juicers. It is more expensive and takes longer to make juice because it presses and crushes the ingredients finer.

When to buy a blender?
  • High-fiber juice since no pulp goes to waste
  • Aids in digestion and detoxification
  • Suitable soft & semi-soft fruits
  • Affordable prices starting from 60-300 SAR
When to buy a juicer?
  • Works with both hard & soft fruits/veggies
  • Easier to digest as there is less pulp
  • Suitable for family with infants/ seniors
  • Juicer prices 100-2000+ SAR
While both have their pros, the blender offers a more nutrient-packed and fiber-laden option. If you are short of time and want more vitamins, minerals, etc. packed a blender is a better option. Juicing is also more expensive as a lot of fiber goes waste.

However, for harder fruits, especially smoothies that include nuts or dates, a juicer is recommended.
