5G Services in Riyadh

5G is the fifth generation of cellular technology. It offers better:
  • Speed
  • Coverage
  • Responsiveness of wireless networks
You also get the benefit of connecting multiple devices as compared to what a traditional cellular network does. This could be a collar around your pet or even a smart refrigerator.

Facts about 5G in KSA
According to the Kingdom’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Saudi Arabia ranks third globally and first in the Middle East, Europe and North Africa region in the deployment of 5G networks. It has 5,797 towers across 30 cities.

In 2018, there were about 20 million mobile phone subscribers in Saudi Arabia. By 2025, this number is expected to cross 36.3 million. These subscribers get connections from the top three top 5G service players, including STC followed by Mobily and Zain. So what are the challenges that hinder 5G in Saudi Arabia, especially Riyadh?

Crowded technical network
The first challenge is an already crowded technical network which includes 2G, 3G and 4G networks.

Overpriced phones
The next problem is the lack of affordable 5G devices in the market. On average, the cost of a 5G mobile phone ranges around SAR 3,500. In comparison, the 40-120 SAR for 2G/3G phones.

Enablement of 5G
Another hurdle is the enablement of 5G in vertical markets, which is fundamental for its success. There is a need to create a strategized roadmap for strengthening 5G in:
  • IoT (Internet of Things)
  • AI (Artificial Intelligence)
  • V2X (vehicle to everything – connected cars)

5G network gets expansive
Recently, Saudi Arabian carrier Zain KSA reached nationwide 5G. They accelerated the rollout of 5G services with new deployments which include the cities of Qurayyat, Ras Tanura and Tabarjal. The company signed a three-year 5G deal with Nokia in 2019 for the deployment of the latter’s 5G infrastructure.
5G benefits include:
  • Unprecedented speed and flexibility for empowering innovation
  • Tremendous potential for new and better customer experience
In particular, with the existing pandemic situation, good internet connectivity is paramount. It helps consumers carry out work- and leisure-related activities smoothly. 5G brings umpteen advantages to IoT or the internet of things. This includes smart factories, connected vehicles, etc, which can generate opportunities worth billions for Saudi Arabia.

5G has penetrated the market, but it is essential that the required measures be undertaken to help it grow. Regulators and operators should consider developing a roadmap to enhance 5G.
